PR begins where most people do not: at first principles. Before he was an investor, he spent more than a decade on one of the world’s most fundamental challenges, energy in the belief that solving it makes the problems layered on top of it, from public health to education to artificial intelligence, far more solvable in turn. As a scientist, he used quantum physics and chemistry to study how light converts to electricity, tracking photo-electrons within one trillionth of a second of their creation and engineering new materials as well as devices at nanometer precision to achieve high solar energy efficiency. His research was cited by thousands, and his own startup helped build some of the earliest solar power plants in the United States and abroad. He also organized a non-profit energy-efficient building competition with teams from eleven countries to encourage cleantech adoption and train next generation global leaders.

He brings the same discipline to venture capital: understand the fundamental forces shaping an industry before committing capital, then back the teams whose critical insight the market has not yet recognized. He has walked that path himself.

PR treats investing as a craft. A martial-arts master can prevail with a stick against a far finer sword; the advantage lies in the practitioner, not the tool. He has pursued that same idea outside of work for years, in Chinese calligraphy, where a brush, ink, and paper are enough to reach the most sophisticated expression, once the discipline is mastered. He approaches golf the same way, often playing with just four clubs almost twenty years old, keeping his attention on the game rather than the equipment.

The same principle guides Yu Galaxy. PR measures success not against others, but against himself. When the firm began, the term “solo-GP” did not yet exist; to him, a firm’s structure is simply another form, kept intentionally simple to reduce noise and sharpen judgment. Because the craft of building enduring companies is the same beneath every sector, he invests with equal conviction across very different fields. Master the craft, and the forms become fluid.

PR came to venture capital the long way — scientist, then successful founder navigating the 2008 financial crisis, then investor. Along the way he concluded that wealth was never the destination, but a responsibility: capital, placed in the right hands, can accelerate human progress and serve the common good.
